Carbon Challenge Syndicate

Carbon Challenge has been accepted as preliminary entry in the Volvo Ocean Race. The second place-getter in the 2005-06 Volvo Ocean Race, known to the public as “Pirates of the Caribbean”, will be the boat the team hopes will carry the Carbon Challenge mission into the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race. “If we are successful with our entry we will prepare the crew and the boat to ensure that we are a respectable competitor", says Campaign Director Tom Weaver.

Carbon Challenge Boathouse

The Carbon Challenge Boathouse is a landmark, mobile, zero-net-energy building which will house the Carbon Challenge Academy and will showcase state-of-the-art energy efficiency in buildings. Because the Boathouse must be able to be moved quickly, it will be modular and compact. Elements with a high level of technicity will be containerized so that they can be unloaded, placed, opened up, and operational in a short time.

Chipperfield Architects is currently exploring the use of wide balcony overhangs to naturally shade the interior spaces and reduce cooling needs; the interior spaces are naturally ventilated by open central spaces. They are working on the principle that a building can be beautiful without compromising performance.
